Salary: Competitive and dependent on experience.
Hours: Permanent, Monday to Friday, 36.5 hours per week. Part-time will also be considered.
HB&O is an award-winning, independent accountancy firm undergoing significant growth and expansion. We are now looking for a detail-oriented and dedicated VAT Compliance Assistant to join our expert VAT advisory team.

As a VAT Compliance Assistant, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your expertise in VAT compliance and advisory, opening the door to a rewarding and varied career.
Job Description:
As part of our expanding VAT team, you’ll have the opportunity to work alongside the Head of VAT and VAT Managers, gaining exposure to a variety of complex compliance tasks and VAT advisory work.
While prior experience in VAT or tax legislation is not essential, some previous experience of bookkeeping or accounts preparation would be beneficial. We are looking for someone eager to learn, with a strong attention to detail and excellent organisational skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date client financial records, ensuring VAT transactions are correctly recorded.
- Allocate payments and ensure VAT liabilities and recoveries are accurately accounted for.
- Assist in preparing and submitting VAT returns in full compliance with statutory requirements, ensuring timeliness and accuracy.
- Assist in preparing and reviewing detailed VAT calculations to ensure compliance with tax regulations and deadlines.
- Build strong, professional relationships with clients, providing support to offer clear and prompt responses to queries and requests.
- Signpost client queries and collaborate with internal teams to support in the timely resolution and the provision of solutions.
- Attend client meetings alongside VAT Managers and the Head of VAT, taking comprehensive notes to format for project records.
- Ensure client records are properly filed- in line with department procedures- on internal systems.
- Update internal systems to monitor the progress of VAT submissions and other key tasks, ensuring smooth workflow.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Excellent organisational and time management skills with attention to detail.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office and Accountif Software packages
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Enthusiasm and ambition to succeed.
- Previous experience of bookkeeping or accounts preparation would be beneficial
